Luxury desert camp in Merzouga: private tents in the Moroccan Sahara
Tassili Luxury Desert Camp is a luxury desert camp in Merzouga, Morocco. Discover a quieter side of the Sahara, set away from the busy camp areas near Merzouga.
The best place in the Sahara for stargazing
When the fire dies down and the camp falls silent, the sky takes over. A few steps away from the lanterns is enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye, no telescope needed. It is what guests write to us about most once they are home.
That is not luck, it is the location. We are at Erg Znaigui, outside the strip where the Merzouga camps are concentrated: no village nearby, no lights from neighbouring camps, no road in the distance. That darkness is the one thing that cannot be improvised, and it is the difference between seeing a few stars and seeing the whole sky.
You can take it in from the terrace of your own tent, without going anywhere. And if you would rather climb a dune and look at it properly, tell us and someone from the team goes with you: at night every dune looks the same. Here is what the Berber nights under the stars are like.
One tip if the night sky is what brings you: check which phase the moon will be in before fixing your dates. At new moon you see far more stars; at full moon fewer, but the dunes are lit silver and you can walk without a torch. Tell us your dates and we will tell you.
A camp set apart, not one more in the row
Tassili Luxury Desert Camp is in Erg Znaigui, close to the Erg Chebbi dunes, 20 minutes from the centre of Merzouga. That is the difference: most camps are packed into the same stretch of dunes, one beside the next. We are outside that area, surrounded by dunes and nothing else.
There are 10 private tents, not fifty. Each with its own bathroom, a hot shower, and air conditioning and heating. It is run by a Berber family from the desert, and you notice it at dinner, in the music afterwards, and in the fact that someone is looking after you before you have to ask.
If you are still comparing places to spend the night, we explain the options plainly in where to stay in the Merzouga desert. And if you want to see it first, here is what the camp is like.

Finding the ideal campsite in Merzouga is a daunting task: the offer is immense and the comments contradictory. […] The first thing that sets it apart is its location: away from the crowded Erg Chebbi area, away from the large and impersonal camps. Everything here is more intimate, more authentic. […] The tents are comfortable, clean and well equipped. […] The value for money is the best we have seen, and we compare a lot.
We have just returned from spending 5 days in the Merzouga desert and are still trying to assimilate how amazing the experience has been. […] The tent was spotless, all super clean and cared for, something that is greatly appreciated in such an environment. And the food… just spectacular. Full breakfasts and amazing dinners. […] If anyone is doubting, really: this is the place.
The camp is exceptional: the delicious food, the cute tent and it had many amenities that made the stay enjoyable, from the bathroom to a very comfortable and warm bed that made us not go cold despite having gone in winter. It is noteworthy that the camp is quite far away from the rest of the camps, which makes one really enjoy the desert experience, like absolute silence. On top of all that, they prepared a surprise for our honeymoon. It was a magical experience.

Glamping in Merzouga: what it is and what it is not
Glamping is camping without giving up what makes a night a good one: a proper bed, your own bathroom and hot water. It is neither a hotel dropped onto the sand nor a camping tent with a rug in it.
Here the difference comes down to three concrete things. The bathroom is inside your own tent, with a toilet and a shower, so nobody crosses the camp at 3am. There is air conditioning and heating, which in January and in June is the difference between sleeping and getting through the night. And there are ten tents, not fifty: once the fire dies down you hear nothing.
What you will not find is a television, a minibar or room service. It is still the desert, and that is the point.
Prices per tent, per night
The price is per tent, not per person, and includes dinner, breakfast, the sunset camel ride, Berber music, sandboarding and the 4x4 transfer.

Getting to the camp
We are in Erg Znaigui, close to Erg Chebbi, 20 minutes from the centre of Merzouga on the N13 road towards Taouz. You do not need to drive or rent a car: getting you here is our job, and the final stretch over sand is done by 4x4.
Flying in? We can meet you at the airport and drive you straight to the camp by private transfer, with no rental car and no hunting for taxis. Send us your flight and we will arrange it.
What people ask us before booking
What happens to my luggage?
It comes with you. We pick you up wherever you are and the bags go into the 4x4 all the way to your tent. Nothing has to be left anywhere and nobody carries anything across the sand. If you fly in, the private airport transfer brings it too.
What does the price include?
Dinner, breakfast, the sunset camel ride, Berber music by the fire, sandboarding and the return 4x4 transfer. No extras appearing when you arrive.
Does the tent have its own bathroom?
Yes. Each of the ten tents has its own bathroom inside, with a toilet and a hot shower. There are no shared facilities.
Is there electricity and wifi?
Yes, there is light in the tents and wifi at the camp. It works for messages and email; do not count on streaming video.
Can we come with children?
Yes. There is a family tent sleeping five and children’s menus. The camel ride and the sandboarding tend to be what they remember.
Can the whole camp be booked?
Ask us: message us with your dates and numbers and we will tell you what is possible.
How long does it take from Marrakech?
Between 10 and 12 hours by road. From Fes it is 8 to 10. And if you fly to Errachidia, it is about two hours.
Is the price per person or per tent?
Per tent per night, according to its occupancy. A double tent is €200 a night for two people, not €200 each, and it includes dinner, breakfast, the camel ride, Berber music, sandboarding and the 4x4 transfer.
Is it cold at night?
In spring and autumn nights sit around 15 °C, and from November to February they drop a good deal further. That is why every tent has heating and air conditioning.
How do we reach the camp?
You do not need to drive. We pick you up and take you to the camp by 4x4, about 10 minutes across the sand, included both ways. If you are flying in, we also arrange the private airport transfer.
Are you open all year?
Yes, all year except July, when we close because of the extreme summer temperatures.
