Errachidia to Merzouga and to the camp
About two hours to the dunes. The fastest way into the desert if you want to skip hours of driving.
The closest airport to the desert
Errachidia’s Moulay Ali Cherif airport is about 120 kilometres from Merzouga. It has domestic flights from Casablanca and Marrakech, and it is the quick way into the dunes: about two hours and you are there.
If your trip through Morocco is short, this saves a full day of driving compared with coming from Marrakech. If you are coming for New Year’s Eve in the desert, it is the quickest way in.
Ways to make the journey
By private transfer
The simplest: you are picked up at the airport or the station and driven straight here. Tell us when you book and we will help arrange it.
If you are driving
Along the N13 via Erfoud and Rissani, paved all the way. If you would rather not drive, we meet you at the airport and bring you straight here.
By shared taxi
Grands taxis link Errachidia with Erfoud and Rissani, and from there to Merzouga. Cheap, but it means waiting and changing.
The last stretch to the camp
We are in Erg Znaigui, 20 minutes from the centre of Merzouga. We come and get you and drive the last 10 minutes in a 4x4, because it is sand from there. Included both ways in your stay.
If the flights do not line up
Errachidia does not have several flights a day, so sometimes the dates do not fit. There are two sensible ways round it.
The first: fly anyway, a day earlier or later, and move the night in the desert. Since the tent rate is the same all year, shifting a day costs you nothing.
The second: come in by road from Fes, which is 8 to 10 hours and the shorter of the two long routes, and fly out of Errachidia. That saves you the long return leg, which is the one people find hardest.
Tell us which flights you are looking at and we will say frankly which of the two suits you, even if it means you do not come that day.
Questions about arriving via Errachidia
How far is Errachidia from Merzouga?
About 120 kilometres on the N13 via Erfoud and Rissani, tarmac the whole way. It is about two hours by car to Merzouga.
Is flying to Errachidia better than driving?
If you are short of days, yes: it saves you a whole day compared with coming from Marrakech. What you lose is the Atlas scenery, which is among the best of Morocco. With a week or more the road is worth it; with four or five days, the plane is.
What is the closest airport to Merzouga?
Errachidia (ERH), about two hours away by road. It is the quickest way into the desert if you want to avoid the ten or twelve hours from Marrakech.
Are there flights to Errachidia?
There are flights from Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc) and Marrakech (Ryanair), and the frequency changes with the season. It is worth looking early, because there is not one every couple of hours.
How do I get from the airport to the camp?
We arrange it. Send us your flight number and arrival time and we will have the private transfer from the airport to the camp ready. You will not have to find a taxi or negotiate anything on landing.
What if I arrive at night?
Not a problem, but tell us beforehand on WhatsApp. The final stretch is over sand and we would rather be waiting for you than have you looking for us in the dark.
Can I get there by taxi or bus from Errachidia?
Yes, there are shared taxis to Rissani and on to Merzouga, and a bus too. It is cheaper than the private transfer and a good deal slower, especially with luggage.
